Random Impressions of Budapest

Before arriving in Budapest, I had certain ideas in mind about what it would be like. Since it had been occupied by the Soviets for over 40 years, I thought it might have depressing blocks of uninteresting architecture. I thought that there might be a fair amount of poverty and many beggars on the streets. Those were misconceptions, it turns out. In the central, historic parts of the city, the buildings are beautiful and reflect the past glories of the city. It is clear that there once was money here--enough for elaborate palaces and the Bel Epoch style of architecture also popular in Paris. There may still be Soviet style blocks of apartment buildings outside the central area, but I didn't see any. As to poverty, there were some beggars on the street, but no more than I have noticed in Seattle.

We have had a bit more trouble getting around town than in Paris, probably due to the language differences. We are more familiar with French than Hungarian, of course. Our maps here aren't quite as good as the maps we had in Paris. This has caused a bit of stress. The Metro and public transportation systems are similar to those in Paris. We have always felt safe when walking in the evening.

The people here are friendly. Many have helped us figure out where to catch buses. This morning a man behind me in the grocery store check out line helped me weigh and label our fruit. They use a different system here. I have felt welcome.

The air seems more polluted here than in Paris. It is also warmer and more humid. A guide said this weather was a little bit warmer than usual for September. She actually liked it as hot as it was.

The water appears safe to drink. We alternate between buying mineral water and drinking from the tap. The green movement doesn't seem to have hit here yet. In Seattle, people are encouraged to use canteens and drink tap water instead of buying bottled water. Bottled water is frequently used here.

This isn't the most vegan-friendly restaurant town. I'm not suffering too much, though. I was able to get a nice dinner last night by asking for a few sides not listed separately on the menu. Happy Cow has suggestions also.

Our apartment is comfortable, modern, and attractive. However, the building it is in has some patches of peeling plaster and paint. It needs an HOA special assessment perhaps to take it to its former glory. I still find the building attractive and would stay here again. Larry won't forget the elevator that jerks when it stops at our floor.

Our amount of time here seems just right for a first visit. We are spending 5 nights total, which has given us 4 full days of sight-seeing. We have managed to visit most of the major sights listed in the guidebooks and figure we've done well. Now, off to the baths for the rest of our last day!
